"I'm going to be an Eagle.... WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!"

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly will sign defensive end Phillip Hunt to a three-year deal. Hunt currently plays for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League, and led the league with 16 sacks in 2010.

Playing his college ball in the University of Houston, Hunt went undrafted in 2009 and “took his talents” to the CFL. His recent success north of the border also caught the eyes of the Houston Texans and Minnesota Vikings, but it looks like he will land in Philadelphia for the 2011 season… if there is one.

It’s an interesting move by the Eagles, and it will likely be an affordable risk for a team undergoing a near-complete overhaul on the defensive side of the ball. If signed, Hunt will be under the tutelage of new defensive line coach Jim Washburn.

Washburn’s reputation as a d-line coach in his 12 years with the Tennessee Titans continues to follow him. If there’s anyone to learn from as Hunt makes his transition from the CFL to the NFL, it’s likely the experienced and respected Washburn.

Diamond in the rough? Probably not. But it seems worth the shot. An example to support that thesis would be the success story of 2010 Pro-Bowler Cameron Wake. Adam Caplan of FOX Sports elaborates:

Miami Dolphins second-year OLB Cameron Wake was a former two-time CFL player of the year. He finished third in the NFL this season with 14-1/2 sacks and was selected to the Pro Bowl.

You never know, folks.

This guy may be a Flyer by the end of "business" today...

The Flyers Reportedly Want A Guy I’ve Been Trained to Hate, and Marty Brodeur Stinks

Everybody in the entire world is reporting that the Flyers want 35-year old Jamie Langenbrunner from the New Jersey Devils. Man… that would take some getting used to.

Langenbrunner has only 14 points this season (4G, 10A) but has had three 60-point seasons in the last four years with New Jersey. He has been with the Devils for the past nine seasons.

Broad Street Hockey thinks that Nikolay Zherdev could be a possibility to deal for the Devils captain. Whatever the case may be, Langenbrunner has to be going somewhere. He has reportedly waived his no-trade clause, cleaned out his locker at the Prudential Center, and was a healthy scratch in the team’s 4-2 loss to the Flyers last night. The Dallas Stars seem to be in the hunt for him as well. View full article »

"Not five wins! Not six wins! Seven, baby! We're in! WOO-HOO!"

Stop complaining.

Yes, conceptually it is a shame that not one, but two 10-win teams were kept out of the playoffs in the NFC.  That doesn’t happen very often. It’s even worse when a 7-9 team does enter the postseason because they were tied for the best record in their division.

They didn’t have the best record outright, they were tied…

…tied.

Icing on the cake? Sure! The Seattle Seahawks were outscored by 97 points in the regular season and were 2-7 in their last nine games going into last night’s regular season finale.

Yeah, I know… but here’s why you can’t complain. View full article »

NFL Week 15: Take Three

“No, dude. Listen. You don’t need your appendix to live…”

Each week, I take on the sportsbooks in Vegas and make my picks in the NFL. It was a 2-1 week for me (42-37 overall) in Week 14 after Rex Ryan and the free-falling New York Jets made me look stupid. Here’s how it looks on paper, folks. And below are my picks for Week 15.

12/12/10 Atlanta Falcons @ Carolina Panthers ATL -8 Win 41-36-0
12/12/10 Cleveland Browns @ Buffalo Bills BUF Win 42-36-0
12/12/10 Miami Dolphins @ New York Jets NYJ -6 Loss 42-37-0

Washington @ Dallas -9 – Ryan’s Pick: Dallas

Rex Grossman is not the answer. Suspending Albert Haynesworth was not the solution. Mike Shanahan must feel like Joe Gibbs the second time around, as coaching the Redskins seems to be much more of a curse than it is a gift.

The free fall in Washington will continue today as they roll into the Lone Star State to play the Dallas Cowboys. The ‘Boys are not the 1-7 team we saw earlier in the season. They’re playing much better football. The Redskins are 2-4 against the spread in their last six games, and the quarterback change from Donovan McNabb to Rex Grossman isn’t going to help here.

Ryan’s main concern – Under their “skin”: Dallas is 1-4 against the spread in their last five games when playing Washington at home. Numbers like that will always make you think twice, but Grossman will make you think a whole lot more than that. Washington is experiencing a free fall on and off the field. As Washington “experiements” while dividing the locker room, Jason Garrett’s team is playing for pride. Take the ‘Boys.

Atlanta -7 @ Seattle – Ryan’s Pick: Atlanta

I’m a believer, and I’m taking the Falcons for the second straight week on the road. The Falcons are hot, winning their last seven games. Matt Ryan’s team dismantled the dismal Panthers last week and to be truthful, the Seahawks really aren’t that much better. They are 21st in points in the NFL and 26th in total yards. The Falcons will have no problem shutting down the league’s second-worst rushing offense.

The Falcons are 9-4 against the spread last week in the 2010 season. They’re also playing with the New Orleans Saints on their coattails. Mike Smith will not let his team falter against a dismal Seattle team. Look for Atlanta to take this game by more than a touchdown.

Ryan’s main concern – Still in it: The Seahawks play in the painfully terrible NFC West. While it tests my gag reflex, that’s the reality. Seattle is… um… challenging the St. Louis Rams to take the division, meaning they still have something to play for. Teams are always more interesting to watch when there is a potential light at the end of the tunnel. But this is also the 11-2 Falcons were talking about here. Not the matchup Pete Carroll was hoping for with the playoffs on the line.

Kansas City +3 @ Saint Louis – Ryan’s Pick: Kansas City

Matt Cassel will start for the Kansas City Cheifs today, and that is vastly important. He has 19 touchdowns and only one intereceptions in the last eight games that he’s played. The Chiefs went without him last week and only amassed 19 yards in the passing game.

St. Louis has covered the spread in three of their last five games. In the three games they covered, they played the 49ers, the Broncos, and the Cardinals. In the two games they didn’t, they played the Falcons and the Saints. Make no mistake about it, the Chiefs are closer to the latter teams mentioned than they are the former. With Matt Cassel under center, this team will be able to handle a very talented Sam Bradford and a not-too-talented Rams team. Cassel is 8-3 against NFC opponents.

Ryan’s main concern – Rams at home: Steve Spagnuolo’s team is 4-2 at home this year (They’re 2-5 otherwise). They beat the Chargers earlier in the season in the dome. The other three teams? Washington, Seattle, Carolina. Quality, not quantity folks. Take the Cheifs, or take Matt Cassel. However you want to look at it.

Enjoy Week 14!

“Blurb Sauce!” is a quick look at some of the stories floating around the blogosphere today. It’s also two really inelegant words put together.

John Clark is a Crazy Airport Stalker.

He’s also good at his job. NBC Philadelphia’s John Clark was at Philly International Airport last night to greet Cliff Lee with a microphone, but really to ask for his autograph. Regardless, Lee gave Clark a couple of minutes, and remained modest after being asked if this Phillies rotation is the greatest of all-time. Check it out here.

P.S. It’s so much cooler when he’s this modest.

McNabb Gets Booed by Fans Outside of Philadelphia… sort of.

The 5-8 Washington Redskins are having the type of season that… well… the Washington Redskins always have. The trade for QB Donovan McNabb hasn’t made much of a difference for the ‘Skins and some even think they’re worse off, despite a $70 million contract extension, which really turned out to be a $4 million plea for Fletcher Smith to shut up. There is even a rumor that backup QB Rex Grossman could start Sunday, although those rumblings have subsided.

On to last night, where the Los Angeles Lakers came to D.C. to play the Washington Wizards. McNabb attended the game, and his face on the big screen led to a chorus of boos sprinkled with cheers, according to Washington Post blogger Dan Steinberg, who wasn’t there.

Some describe the reaction more as half-and-half, and a couple others mention that it was mostly Lakers fans that booed the Skins’ embattled quarterback.  Whatever the case may be, this “story” wouldn’t be a story if McNabb and the Redskins were playing better. Mike Sellers and DeAngelo Hall also didn’t receive the warmest of receptions.

DeSean Jackson is the NFC Offensive Player of the Week

And who is really surprised? Jackson’s four catches for 210 yards was the third-highest single game total for the Eagles in their history. (Interesting to note that Kevin Curtis, who just battled testicular cancer and signed with the Dolphins this week, is second on that list)

Jackson has given himself plenty of reasons to be in the news this week, given his on-the-field and off-the-field antics. However, we always welcome news like this.  It should also be known that Jackson is only the 8th player in NFL history to have at least 900 receiving yards in his first three seasons in the league. Congratulations to him on the accolade.

MJ Not Phased by Monster Dunk

Late in the third quarter of last night’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats, the Raptors’ Demar DeRozan delivered an electrifying dunk while drawing a foul and giving his team the lead. That’s pretty damn impressive.

Michael Jordan didn’t look so impressed…

Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk came across a great video of the dunk, followed by MJ’s stoic, seemingly bored reaction. Jordan is the majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, so on top of “not being impressed”, he was probably a little pissed off, too.

All the more entertaining, so make sure you check it out!

The Flyers Topple The Penguins

On top of watching a very entertaining game last night with terrible commentary from the folks at Versus, the Flyers were able to pull out a 3-2 victory over the cooled-down Pittsburgh Penguins, whose winning streak ended at 12. The win also put the Flyers in the league lead with 45 points.

Who better to recap last night’s victory than Daily News Flyers beat writer Frank Seravalli? Seravalli is also an alum of Ancillae-Assumpta Academy and Holy Ghost Prep, two schools I’ve always had a deep affection for… for one reason or another. Check it out here!
