The kind of mischevious look that makes you think he silently farted and everyone is just starting to catch a whiff...

Given the recent struggles of the Flyers on the defensive side of the puck, the news of Chris Pronger’s (limited) return to the ice is a positive for fans of the orange and black.

Pronger broke a bone in his foot this past December and was projected to be out 4-6 weeks. He received medical clearance today from Dr. Steven Raikin to resume light skating.

In a related story, the Flyers defensemen has no idea how to partake in “light skating”, but I imagine he’ll have to learn quickly. View full article »

Blurb Sauce! 12/21/10

Months later, people are still making LeBron look selfish.

“Blurb Sauce!” is a quick look at some of the stories floating around the blogosphere today. It’s also the condiment that ruins Santa’s diet every year.

Hey LeBron, This Is How You Do It

Carlos Peña is not LeBron James. Peña plays baseball, James plays basketball. Peña is good, James is legendary. There’s also a good chance they have different favorite foods, but because pizza exists, I can’t guarantee that.

It would be rare to see these two names in the same sentence… ever, but read this carefully. LeBron James could take a page or two out of Peña’s book. After he joined the Chicago Cubs in free agency this offseason, the former Tampa Bay Ray took an ad out in the Tampa Bay Tribune. You can check out the text of that ad at Carrie Muskat’s Chicago Cubs blog on the MLBlogs Network.

That’s the classy way to go out, King James. A heartfelt thank you to the city that embraced you with open arms for four years (in Lebron’s case, seven… well, really most of his life). There’s a way to make the right decision, and a way to make “The Decision”. Looks like Carlos Peña made the right one.

Stan Hochman attempts a nickname for R2C2… a week too late.

With all due respect to longtime Philadelphia sportswriter Stan Hochman, someone at the Philadelphia Daily News should have had the guts to let him know that this article wasn’t going to fly.

Hochman’s piece reflects around finding a nickname for the new and improved Phillies pitching staff, but this comes a week too late, and the nicknames he suggests are mostly terrible. He settled on “Un-four-gettables”. He will be the only one to ever call them that.

It’s a shame that people will read this today and roll their eyes at legendary sportswriter from our great city. I will admit, however, that I love “Mount Rushfour”. You didn’t completely strikeout, Stan, and you’re still the man.

Andy Reid didn’t see questionable replays on Sunday

The wonderful folks at Philly Sports Daily did a quick write-up on Andy Reid’s press conference yesterday, where Reid claimed that they didn’t see replays of questionable calls yesterday, which did affect the coach’s decision to hold the red challenge flag in key situations. You can catch that story here.

It sounds a little suspect to hear something like this, especially considering the number of reversible calls made by the referees in the big division matchup. You have to wonder if the Eagles would have that problem at Lincoln Financial Field…

KO in Phoenix

I was scrolling through Yahoo! hockey blog “Puck Daddy” this morning when I caught this impressive knockout punch from Pens defenseman Deryk Engelland to the Coyotes Taylor Pyatt.

I hate the Pens as much as the next Philadelphian, but that was a heck of a shot to add insult to injury. The Penguins were already up 5-0 early in the third. The game was over, but this is what happens when an embarrassed team tries to play for pride.

"Looking up at us is all you'll be doing for quite a while, Jarkko."

“Blurb Sauce!” is a quick look at some of the stories floating around the blogosphere today. It’s also what I put on my rigatoni on Pasta Night every Tuesday.

It was a slow night in Philadelphia sports… haven’t said that in awhile. Anyway, here are some things you may have missed on Thursday.

The Flyers and Penguins Deliver for Versus

Tuesday night’s game pitting the Flyers against the Penguins was more than just the battle for Pennsylvania this time around. It was the biggest game in the NHL thus far. As such, it shouldn’t be surprising that the game was the highest-rated regular season hockey game in seven years!

Kyle Scott of Crossing Broad has more on the story, including the tendency of the city’s teams to be involved in breaking ratings records as of late. Certainly not a bad thing.

P.K. Subban Destroys Brad Marchand

Staying with hockey, Montreal Canadiens rookie P.K. Subban is a name you may remember. Mike Richards made a big stink about an incident between Subban and Scotty Hartnell in November, where Hartnell says he was choked by the rookie.

Richards said, “You can’t just come in here as a rookie and play like that. It’s not the way to get respect from other players around the League.”

Well maybe this is how you get it.

I’m pretty sure that hip check just took a few games off of Brad Marchand’s career.

J.R. Smith One-ups Demar DeRozan

On Tuesday night, the Raptors’ Demar DeRozan delivered the best dunk of the year… until J.R. Smith of the Denver Nuggets closed the first quarter against the Spurs with some straight up viciousness. Play-by-play man Kevin Harlan contributes with the perfect dose of intensity. Check this one out, folks.

Yao Ming Makes A “Funny… A “Really Funny”

There’s not much to laugh about for Houston Rockets center Yao Ming. He has been plagued with foot injuries throughout his career and will be out indefinitely after his latest stress fracture. Some are reporting that the injury will keep him out for the duration of the season.

Yao seems to be doing just fine, though, as he delivered a late entry for “Funniest Quote of the Year”. Damn… this guy is getting better with his English.

“I haven’t died.” Yao said. “Right now, I’m drinking a beer and eating fried chicken. What were you expecting, a funeral?”

Nice to know that a guy who has missed almost 170 games in the past five years can still laugh a little. Plus, he has a ton of money…

With division titles and playoff hopes on the line, it's make or break for the Manning brothers on Sunday.

If I covered every key matchup in the NFL this Sunday, I would be writing for quite awhile.

In 16 days, we’ll know which playoff scenarios come true, and which will fade into oblivion. There are seven games in this jam-packed weekend that could give us some answers before those days are up. At the moment, the Patriots are the only team to have clinched a playoff spot. It’s almost safe to say they’ve all but clinched the AFC East as well. The other seven divisions are all up for grabs, making this the juiciest weekend of football I’ve seen in a long time.

Jacksonville (8-5) @ Indianapolis (7-6), 1:00 pm, CBS

Peyton Manning isn’t used to his back being up against the wall until at least the playoffs. He and the Indianapolis Colts will have to adapt accordingly if they want to see the playoffs at all. The Colts will see the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday in their second meeting of the season. If the Colts lose to the Jags (like they did in Week 4), it will give David Garrard’s team their first division title since 1999, when current Giants coach Tom Coughlin was at the helm.

With the Ravens and the Jets unlikely to lose their Wild Card spots, the Colts have no consolation prize to rely on. The team has been plagued with injuries. 11 Colts have been placed on injured reserve including tackle Tony Ugoh, wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, safety Bob Sanders, and tight end Dallas Clark, who arguably served as Manning’s favorite target in recent years. 13 players are currently on their injury report. The inability to stay healthy is reminiscent of the woes of the 2010 Boston Red Sox. It’s just a case of bad luck.

But that doesn’t mean the team is down and out. They have lost four of their games by three points or less, and at least they were able to put an end to a three-game losing streak by squeaking out a victory against the Tennessee Titans last week.

Let’s put it this way… this whole blurb has been about the Colts. If they don’t come through on Sunday, it will be all about the Jags as Peyton Manning will be forced to sit home in January for only the third time in his storied career. Think about that for a second… wow.

Philadelphia (9-4) @ New York Giants (9-4), 1:00 pm, FOX

I love these divisional games coming in at the end of the season, especially in the NFC East, where the games just feel like they mean more than they do in other divisions. They garner more attention, they bring in high ratings, and there’s always a storyline or twelve to chit-chat about at the water cooler. Sweet…

The Birds (9-4) will take on the New York Football Giants, a team with the same record and a lot to play for in a hotly contested division and conference. The Giants will look to stop the broken record, having lost their last five against Philadelphia. And despite a strong rushing tandem in Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs, the Eagles defense had their number five weeks ago, when they held them to a dismal 61 yards.

Giants QB Eli Manning leads the league in interceptions with 19, and is probably hoping that injury-ridden Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel misses his fourth game in a row. Samuel picked off Manning twice in their first meeting this season. With or without Samuel the Birds will have to play better on defense, especially in the red zone. The team ranks last in red zone defense, allowing a touchdown on 78.8 percent of opponents’ possessions inside the 20-yard line.

Michael Vick is ready to go, despite taking a few tough hits from defensive end Anthony Spencer in Week 14. His favorite target, DeSean Jackson, would love to repeat his four-catch, 210 yard performance last week. The Giants defense, however, have played the Eagles  a lot better than most teams this season. They held Michael Vick to only one passing touchdown in Week 10, and monster defensive end Justin Tuck had all three sacks on Vick in that matchup.

The Giants blew an early fourth quarter lead in Week 10, allowing the Eagles to score the last 11 points in a 27-17 victory. Another loss would allow the Eagles to control their own destiny, and place them in a good position to work towards a first-round bye.

But what do you say we just worry about Sunday for now?

Other BIG matchups in Week 15:

"Hey Steve, not for nothin', but I think they forgot we won last year..."

  • New Orleans (10-2) @ Baltimore (9-4), 1:00 pm, FOX: A battle of two potential playoff monsters that have done a helluva job staying under the radar. Each team is just one game back in their respective divisions. And uh, hey, did you forget that the Saints are the defending Super Bowl Champions? If so, you aren’t the only one.
  • Kansas City (8-5) @ Saint Louis (6-7), 1:00 pm, CBS: The San Diego Chargers are making their typical December push with Philip Rivers at quarterback. He is 20-1 in games in December and January, and that doesn’t bode well for the Chiefs. At 8-5, they remain one-half game ahead of the Bolts for the division lead, but that could fade away for good if the Sam Bradford-led Rams have anything to say about it. At 6-7, the Rams are still playing for something. In fact, they’re playing for the NFC West crown… and while that’s a bit sad, it’s what happens when you have four awful teams playing in the same division. Regardless, there is plenty of motivation for both teams to win on Sunday, but even more urgency.
  • Atlanta (11-2) @ Seattle (6-7), 4:05, FOX: The Rams division “foe” is the Seattle Seahawks, who share their regular season record. They, too, will playing a division leader in the seemingly unstoppable Atlanta Falcons. Maybe the only good news for Pete Carroll’s team is they aren’t playing in the Georgia Dome, where Matt Ryan is 19-1 as a starter. The Seahawks will need to play better defense, they give up more than 25 points a game. Ironically, that’s the same number that the Falcons score. It could get ugly fast.
  • New York Jets (9-4) @ Pittsburgh (10-3). 4:15 pm, CBS: The Jets are a loss away from an official free fall in the AFC. Mark Sanchez cannot complete just 39 percent of his passes again. In fact, the Jets are 11-2 when Sanchez’s passer rating surpasses 80, so it usually doesn’t take much. The Steelers, on the other hand are primed for a playoff run. They’ve won five of their last six. A little storyline to watch… Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes returns to Heinz Field for the first time since being traded. It could be interesting.
  • Green Bay (8-5) at New England (11-2), 8:20, NBC: Aaron Rodgers will likely sit out as a result of his concussion last week against the Lions. It probably wouldn’t matter anyway. Bill Belicheck is 10-0 in the snow, and guess what the forecast is calling for in Foxboro… yep.

Enjoy Week 15 folks! My “Take Three” column will be posted Sunday morning.

“Blurb Sauce!” is a quick look at some of the stories floating around the blogosphere today. It’s also two really inelegant words put together.

John Clark is a Crazy Airport Stalker.

He’s also good at his job. NBC Philadelphia’s John Clark was at Philly International Airport last night to greet Cliff Lee with a microphone, but really to ask for his autograph. Regardless, Lee gave Clark a couple of minutes, and remained modest after being asked if this Phillies rotation is the greatest of all-time. Check it out here.

P.S. It’s so much cooler when he’s this modest.

McNabb Gets Booed by Fans Outside of Philadelphia… sort of.

The 5-8 Washington Redskins are having the type of season that… well… the Washington Redskins always have. The trade for QB Donovan McNabb hasn’t made much of a difference for the ‘Skins and some even think they’re worse off, despite a $70 million contract extension, which really turned out to be a $4 million plea for Fletcher Smith to shut up. There is even a rumor that backup QB Rex Grossman could start Sunday, although those rumblings have subsided.

On to last night, where the Los Angeles Lakers came to D.C. to play the Washington Wizards. McNabb attended the game, and his face on the big screen led to a chorus of boos sprinkled with cheers, according to Washington Post blogger Dan Steinberg, who wasn’t there.

Some describe the reaction more as half-and-half, and a couple others mention that it was mostly Lakers fans that booed the Skins’ embattled quarterback.  Whatever the case may be, this “story” wouldn’t be a story if McNabb and the Redskins were playing better. Mike Sellers and DeAngelo Hall also didn’t receive the warmest of receptions.

DeSean Jackson is the NFC Offensive Player of the Week

And who is really surprised? Jackson’s four catches for 210 yards was the third-highest single game total for the Eagles in their history. (Interesting to note that Kevin Curtis, who just battled testicular cancer and signed with the Dolphins this week, is second on that list)

Jackson has given himself plenty of reasons to be in the news this week, given his on-the-field and off-the-field antics. However, we always welcome news like this.  It should also be known that Jackson is only the 8th player in NFL history to have at least 900 receiving yards in his first three seasons in the league. Congratulations to him on the accolade.

MJ Not Phased by Monster Dunk

Late in the third quarter of last night’s game against the Charlotte Bobcats, the Raptors’ Demar DeRozan delivered an electrifying dunk while drawing a foul and giving his team the lead. That’s pretty damn impressive.

Michael Jordan didn’t look so impressed…

Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk came across a great video of the dunk, followed by MJ’s stoic, seemingly bored reaction. Jordan is the majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, so on top of “not being impressed”, he was probably a little pissed off, too.

All the more entertaining, so make sure you check it out!

The Flyers Topple The Penguins

On top of watching a very entertaining game last night with terrible commentary from the folks at Versus, the Flyers were able to pull out a 3-2 victory over the cooled-down Pittsburgh Penguins, whose winning streak ended at 12. The win also put the Flyers in the league lead with 45 points.

Who better to recap last night’s victory than Daily News Flyers beat writer Frank Seravalli? Seravalli is also an alum of Ancillae-Assumpta Academy and Holy Ghost Prep, two schools I’ve always had a deep affection for… for one reason or another. Check it out here!
