Michael Young looks into the distance, where he sees $48 million, no matter where his future lies... must be nice.

Now this is just silly.

The Philadelphia Phillies inquired about Texas Rangers second basemen, shortstop, third basemen, designated hitter, head chef, Tarot card reader… player Michael Young today. Young has requested a trade from the Texas Rangers after being moved to numerous positions on the field, the latest move to designated hitter after the Rangers signed free agent thid baseman Adrian Beltre.

With Chase Utley playing second, Jimmy Rollins at Shortstop, Placido Polanco at third, and my source telling me that there is no designated hitter in the National League, it would be hard to imagine how Young would fit. However, with the injuries suffered by the Phillies last year, Young would be one hell of an insurance policy. And ya know, he’s a right-handed bat. That’d be nice.

The other problem here would be the money. Young is owed $48 million over the next three years and the thought of him joining the Phils is nothing short of absurd. I’m actually convinced that Ruben Amaro was sad because he hasn’t seen his team’s name on MLBTradeRumors.com in more than a week, and it led him to call some folks in Arlington.

If you can find a positive from this, it would be that it’s nice to know the Phils’ front office seemingly explores every possibly option out there, even when it’s not really an option. You have to appreciate that as a fan. It’s that approach that has likely gotten the makeup of this team to where it is right now.

Spring Training in four days folks.

This rivalry doesn't have the allure it once did.

The Phillies are selling out quickly for 2011.

Vice President of Sales and Ticket Operations John Weber noted this morning that “between [the Phillies] sold-out season ticket base of 28,500, group sales and Six Game Pack sales to date, we’ve already sold 3.1 million tickets for the upcoming season.”

Wow. That’s pretty impressive. What’s even better is that this morning, the Phillies began selling three-game packs today. The new initiative allows fans to commit to less games than they would in a six-game pack or larger ticket plan. They’ll still be able to go to a number of Phillies games and reserve their seats before single-game tickets go on sale next Thursday.

But take a closer look at these ticket packages posted this morning… what is similar about each one of them?

Okay, I’ll tell you.

Every package forces you to buy a Mets game, either on April 6th or 7th. This begs the question… are the Phillies having trouble selling out the second series of the season? Does no one want to see the Mets anymore?

There was a time when there was only one six-pack option featuring Mets games… and that was just two years ago! The Mets have enough problems right now, it certainly doesn’t help things that the allure of what is possibly their biggest rivalry is fizzing out.

Whatever the case is, it seems like no mistake that every Phillies three-game plan includes a “must-select” option for one of these two Mets games.

Having said all of this, there is no doubt in my mind that the Phillies will sell out each of their 81 regular season home games this year. And if they are having trouble with those two games in April, this is a great way to address it. There is a Texas Rangers pack, a division-rival Atlanta Braves pack, and an April 2nd Houston Astros pack that will feature the return of Cliff Lee to the mound at Citizens Bank Park. Glorious.

There’s also a Mets pack, which means… two Mets games…

…I’m not sure how that one will sell in comparison.

Cliff Lee's best days could be ahead of him. Brian Cashman's mouth could ensure that his are behind him.

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was asked a question yesterday that he never should have answered. During a luncheon sponsored by New York’s WFAN Radio yesterday, Cashman was asked whether or not Derek Jeter would finish his new Yankees contract in the outfield.

He replied in the affirmative.

Here, he answers a question about a freshly-signed integral part of their franchise and delivers an answer that isn’t going to help anything. Jeter signed a three-year, $51 million deal with a fourth-year option. When the press conference was held in December, Jeter used the word ‘angry’ to describe the tone of his talks with the Yankees in working towards the new contract, but said he would put any bad feelings behind him.

So, if Jeter is willing to do that, why would Cashman even address a question like this? He knows the market his team is in and he is more than aware of the popularity of his long-tenured shortstop. This was careless and borderline classless and that’s putting it lightly. View full article »

Sixers “Played” A Basketball Game Last Night, Sources Say

Considering the euphoria surrounding Philadelphia sports last week, this week has started off kind of crappy. The Flyers laid an egg in their last game at home until January 8th, and they lost to the dismal Florida Panthers. Then last night, the Sixers went to Chicago to lose by 45 points.
